This is the first time it has been applied in the La Plata Judicial Department. Teves, 38, will continue to be imprisoned at the disposal of the Execution Court, serving a life sentence imposed for the femicide of Gómez Coronel.
THE EVENT For the judges, it was proven that on January 2, 2022, around 11:45 PM, in a house located at 156 street between 529 and 530 in the Santa Ana neighborhood, Teves attacked his partner with a knife with clear intentions to kill her, in a context of gender-based violence. During the attack, Teves stabbed her multiple times in the head, torso, and upper limbs, one of which was in the neck, causing extremely serious injuries. Criminal Court No. 4 of La Plata sentenced Nelson Iván Teves this Thursday to life in prison for the aggravated homicide by kinship and by gender-based violence against his partner, Tamara Magalí Gómez Coronel. The unanimous ruling, to which this medium had access, was signed by judges Carolina Crispiani, Emir Caputo Tártaro, and Ezequiel Medrano. The magistrates unanimously established that Teves murdered Gómez Coronel in a context of control, subordination, and gender-based violence, after the woman decided to end the relationship. According to the sentence, the fact occurred after the victim asked the accused to leave the home, located in the locality of Melchor Romero. Teves refused, went to the kitchen to get a knife, and returned to the bedroom, where he stabbed her multiple times in vital areas, causing her death. The court considered it proven that the attack was not the product of an impulsive reaction, but a conscious and deliberate act, motivated by the aggressor's intention to reaffirm his dominance and punish the victim's decision for autonomy. In her vote, Judge Crispiani emphasized that the crime must be analyzed from a gender perspective, as it was a lethal aggression perpetrated in a "asymmetric, controlling, and dominating" relational context, and that the accused was driven by a "possessive and punitive motive against the decision to break up". The court rejected the defense arguments that sought to frame the fact as a homicide committed under "violent emotion". The victim was urgently transferred to the Alejandro Korn Hospital, where she entered without vital signs. Once the fact was consummated, and upon being surprised by the victim's sister, Teves fled the place, but was shortly after detained by officers from the 14th Police Station of Romero. The police recognized him by his clothing and physical appearance, also verifying that he presented brown-reddish stains compatible with blood on his arms, hands, and part of his torso. "Accepting that argument would legitimize patriarchal schemes that objectify women as objects of property," stated the judge. Similarly, the judges discarded causes of impunity, since psychiatric determinations established that the accused understood the criminality of his acts and directed his conduct with full lucidity. The sentence was handed down in accordance with articles 80, sections 1 and 11 of the Penal Code, which aggravate homicide when there is an affective bond and gender-based violence. The court also ordered to communicate the sentence to ANSES so that the victim's daughter can access the benefit provided for by the Brisa Law, which grants an economic reparation to sons and daughters of women victims of femicide. In addition, it was given intervention to the Ministry of Women, Gender Policies, and Sexual Diversity of the Province and the Local Service for the Protection of Children's Rights to guarantee the accompaniment and comprehensive protection of the minor.
